This is a plus tree selected by TGG from a Chinese Academy of Forestry variety from Guangdong Province China. This variety or related selections (such as FGD09) have made up the bulk of Paulownia plantings in Australia to date (mostly in temperate to sub-tropical zones). Reliable, robust and adaptable to a wide range of soil and climate; if healthy will easily tolerate -10°C in winter to 47°C in summer. Good trunk form for rapid timber production and ornamental shade tree, with pyramid to rounded canopy shape in maturity. Large purple, fading to pink, trumpet shaped flowers cover the tree in spring, infusing the air with honey suckle blended with violet-like fragrance.

Derived from a Guangdong seed orchard and further developed by TGG in Australia. TGG have supplied this variety to plantations in climatic regions ranging from arid (with very long hot summers and heavy frost in winter) to wet tropics, with positive results. Early growth is steady with a growth spurt in year 3 followed by good increment each year with a form suitable for timber production and ornamental shade tree. In spring, for a mature tree, the pyramid form canopy above the straight trunk is decorated with spectacular large pale purple to cream with yellow and dark purple interior trumpet shaped flowers, with an aroma evocative of jasmine.

Created by TGG from a GuiZhou Province, China, line which has been greatly improved through induced change and selection, Austral Splendour has been supplied to a wide range of sites from Thailand to Arizona. Early growth is very rapid supported by enormous large dark green leaves. As the trunk develops it thickens and strengthens ensuring a robust tree more resilient to less than perfect conditions. The form is pyramid shaped becoming rounded with age with generally around 4 to 6m clear stem before the lower branches (although can also be a shorter bushier shape if desired, by pruning tips and encouraging lower limbs). Extraordinarily impressive in spring, with a complete covering of masses of honey suckle / jasmine scented, frilly, bright bluish-purple trumpet flowers with unique deep purple throats.
